| Summary, etc. | Darf oder muss ein Christ unter bestimmten Umständen lügen? In De mendacio definiert Augustinus den Begriff »Lüge« und versucht dann den Nachweis, dass es sich bei den von den Befürwortern der Lüge herangezogenen Exempeln der Bibel um gar keine Lügen handelt. Trotzdem muss er einräumen, dass sich seine Idealvorstellung, man dürfe nie lügen, vor allem im Hinblick auf die sogenannte Nutzlüge im täglichen Leben nicht verwirklichen lässt. Deshalb entwirft er ein auf der Aufrechnung von Nutzen und Schaden beruhendes System von acht zum Besseren hin aufsteigenden Stufen der Lüge, die in jedem Fall hassenswert bleibt. Contra mendacium verdankt seine Entstehung der zu Augustins Zeit vor allem in Spanien verbreiteten Sekte der Priszillianisten. Diese vertraten die Auffassung, um unentdeckt zu bleiben, müsse man im Notfall sogar einen Meineid leisten. Rechtgläubige Eiferer versuchten sie mit ihren eigenen Mitteln, Lüge und Verstellung, zu schlagen. Einer von ihnen berichtete Augustinus stolz von einem entsprechenden Unternehmen zur Aufdeckung eines priszillianistischen Zirkels. Statt ihn zu loben, betont Augustinus jedoch nachdrücklich, Lüge sei immer verwerflich und in Glaubensfragen dürfe man unter keinen Umständen lügen. |
