520 _aPsychedelic Substances Research is a fully open access, peer-reviewed journal publishing research and commentary on the use of psychedelic substances in medicine, psychology and psychotherapy. Psychedelic substances (also referred to as hallucinogens) are defined as psychoactive substances profoundly alter perception, cognition, mood, and consciousness, often producing changes in sensory experience and self-awareness. The Journal considers applications on all types of psychedelic substances, including purely synthetic compounds (such as LSD), semi-synthetic or naturally derived compounds (such as DMT), naturally occurring compounds (such as psilocybin or mescaline), preparations of plants and fungi with psychedelic properties, and substances that have specific uses in cultural, ritual and religious contexts. Substances that are not classified as hallucinogens but can produce psychedelic effects will be considered (such as ketamine or MDMA). Psychedelic Substances Research provides a resource for informed policy discussion and public discourse on the appropriate use of psychedelic substances in medicine. The journal also aims to inform the organisation of health research systems for psychedelic substances according to current national and international regulations and to foster engagement with differing cultural and religious perspectives on using psychedelic substances more broadly. Psychedelic Substances Research therefore aims to be multidisciplinary and support clinical medicine, psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience, pharmacology, biochemistry and genetics, public health, public policy, traditional medicine, anthropology, and ethnobotany. Examples of therapeutic applications include: Cognitive effects of psilocybin in patients with treatment-resistant depression Impact of psychedelic-assisted therapy on end-of-life anxiety in cancer patients MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Neurobiological mechanisms underlying the antidepressant effects of ketamine Cognitive performance of individuals using regular microdoses of LSD Spiritual and religious practices using ayahuasca for enhancing well-being and personal growth Effectiveness of various psychedelic substances in overcoming addiction or controlling addictive behaviours.
