520			_aDie katholische Kirche und die 'Moderne' – ein Thema, über das sich heute genauso trefflich streiten lässt wie schon vor 100 Jahren. Damals hatte Pius X. in einem Rundumschlag alles Moderne verurteilt. Ins-besondere die Glaubenswächter der Inquisition und Indexkongregation hatten diese 'antimodernistische' Haltung zu vertreten und verurteilten Bücher über Bücher. Doch warum hielt man damals an der Römischen Kurie alles für schlimm, was mit 'modern' zu tun hatte? Warum ließ man sogar bis 1967 die katholischen Priester in einem 'Antimodernisteneid' den Irrtümern der Zeit abschwören und dem kirchlichen Lehramt unerschütterliche Unterordnung geloben? Nach einer Analyse, warum es vor gut 100 Jahren überhaupt zu einem solch erklärten Antimodernismus kommen konnte und auf welche Archive sich die Forschung heute stützen kann, werden ausgewählte Fälle vorgestellt. Für den weiteren Fortgang der Forschungen dürfte das im Anhang enthaltene Inventar sämtlicher deutscher Buchzensurfälle von 1893 bis 1922 von ausschlaggebender Bedeutung sein.
