Announcement: Current Genetics is joining the Discover series! We are pleased to announce that Current Genetics will become fully open access (OA) on 1 January 2026 and move into our Discover series as Discover Genetics and Evolution. As a result of this change, all submissions received from 4 August 2025 are subject to an article publication charge (APC) if accepted (unless a waiver is applied) and will be published in Discover Genetics and Evolution. Please see our journal update announcement for more information on APCs, funding options, waivers and the journal's transition to fully open access. Current Genetics publishes genetic, genomic, molecular, and systems-level analyses of prokaryotes, fungi, or protists. Manuscripts focused on fundamental questions of mitochondrial/chloroplast biology will be considered as well. The journal welcomes submissions employing any type of research approach, whether analytical (aiming at a better understanding), applied (aiming at practical applications), synthetic, or theoretical. Current Genetics no longer accepts manuscripts describing the genome sequence of mitochondria/chloroplast of a small number of species. Manuscripts covering sequence comparisons and analyses that include a large number of species will still be considered. From 1 January 2026, Discover Genetics and Evolution will be a fully open access, peer-reviewed journal that supports multidisciplinary research across all fields relevant to genetics and evolution. The journal aims to be a resource for researchers, policy makers and the general public for recent advances in genetics and evolution science and its uses in research development and society. As a fully open access journal, we ensure that our research is highly discoverable and instantly available globally to everyone. The journal particularly welcomes work that aims to address the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially Life Below Water; Life on Land; Good Health and Wellbeing; and Zero Hunger. Topics Topics welcomed at Discover Genetics and Evolution include but are not limited to the following: Across all types of life Applied genetic technologies Bioinformatics Computational genetics Data notes Epigenomics Evolutionary genetics and phylogeny Metabolomics Methods Proteomics Transcriptomics Animal genetics and genomics Aquaculture genetics Behavioural genetics Lab animals Livestock genetics Taxonomy Human genetics and genomics Biomarkers for diagnostics Genetic epidemiology Genetic impact on diseases Genomic medicine Pharmacogenomics RNA Vaccines Microbe genetics and genomics Modifying microbe genomes Taxonomy Virulent microbe genetic typing Plant genetics and genomics Crop genetics Plant disease genetics Reproductive genetics and plant breeding Taxonomy .
