| Summary, etc. | Im Zeitalter der Aufklärung sorgte der römische Index verbreitet für Empörung; die Verbotsverfahren galten als schwer durchschaubar und ungerecht. 1753 wollte Papst Benedikt XIV. das ändern. Mit der Konstitution „Sollicita ac provida“ verschriftlichte er die Regeln der Zensur. Hubert Wolf und Bernward Schmidt edieren und erläutern in diesem Band die Konstitution selbst sowie wichtige Dokumente zu ihrer Entstehung und ihrer Wirkung. „Sollicita ac provida“ hat bis zum Ende des „Index der verbotenen Bücher“ die Arbeit von Römischer Inquisition und Indexkongregation entscheidend beeinflusst. Aber brachte die Konstitution wirklich Neues oder schrieb sie nur Altbewährtes fest? Verschaffte Papst Benedikt XIV., selbst ein angesehener Historiker und Kanonist, den katholischen Gelehrten neue Freiräume? Stellte er die Zensur vielleicht sogar grundsätzlich infrage? Diese Fragen können eingehend diskutiert werden, nachdem vor gut zehn Jahren die Archive der Glaubenskongregation geöffnet worden sind. Hubert Wolf und seine Mitarbeiter erarbeiten derzeit im Rahmen eines Langzeitprojektes der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft die Grundlagen zur Erforschung einzelner Zensurfälle. |
