| Summary, etc. | Due to the success of his Gesichte Philanders von Sittewalt , Johann Michael Moscherosch became both a bestselling author of the 17th century and one of the most important German-speaking satirists of his time. Like many of his contemporaries, he did not exclusively write by his own invention, but frequently translated foreign-language texts which he adapted for his target readership. The different manners of writing – from translation and adaptation to attempts to write independently – are the subject of this study, which is the first to include in-depth analyses of Moscherosch’s satirical writings as well as his edification book and his German-French dictionary. Using an approach based in philology and hermeneutics, the study explores which questions and problems that concerned the 17th-century republic of letters Moscherosch addresses in his works, how he expresses and reflects them, and how he communicates them to his audience. Precise readings of Moscherosch’s work against backdrops such as Lutheran piety, the 17th-century notion of German ‘Kulturpatriotismus’ and the overarching crisis of the Thirty Years’ War reveal that his writing is shaped by its position in the ‘in-between’: between translation and ‘originality’, between regional contexts and the pursuit of wider recognition, and between the genuine intent to educate his readers and his calculated catering to the needs of the book market. Dank seiner Gesichte Philanders von Sittewalt gilt Johann Michael Moscherosch als ‚Bestseller-Autor‘ des 17. Jahrhunderts sowie als einer der wichtigsten deutschsprachigen Satiriker seiner Zeit. Wie viele seiner Zeitgenossen erfindet er seine Erzählungen aber nicht vollständig selbst, sondern nutzt mitunter fremdsprachige Vorlagentexte, die er übersetzt und an sein Zielpublikum anpasst. Moscheroschs unterschiedliche Formen der Textherstellung zwischen dem Übersetzen und Bearbeiten von Vorlagentexten und dem Erproben eigener Darstellungsweisen und Inhalte sind das Thema der vorliegenden Studie, die erstmals neben den Satiren auch sein Erbauungsbuch und sein französisch-deutsches Sachgruppenwörterbuch ausführlich untersucht. Ausgehend von einem philologisch-hermeneutischen Ansatz fragt sie danach, welche Fragen und Probleme, die die Literaten- und Gelehrtenwelt des 17. Jahrhunderts beschäftigten, Eingang in Moscheroschs Œuvre finden, wie er sie gestaltet, reflektiert und an sein Publikum vermittelt. Durch die genaue Lektüre der einzelnen Werke vor Hintergründen wie der prägenden lutherischen Frömmigkeitskonzeption, dem zeitgenössischen ‘Kulturpatriotismus’ und dem Generationenerlebnis des Dreißigjährigen Krieges wird erkennbar, dass Moscheroschs literarisches Schaffen von einer Position im ‘Dazwischen’ geprägt ist: Es bewegt sich zwischen Übersetzung und ‘Originalität’, zwischen der Einbettung in regionale Zusammenhänge und dem Streben nach überregionaler Anerkennung sowie zwischen einer genuinen Belehrungsabsicht und buchhändlerischem Kalkül. |
