Summary, etc. The Journal of Membrane Biology publishes high‑quality research that advances the understanding of the biophysical, biochemical, and functional properties of biological membranes. We welcome studies across all domains of life and encourage work that deepens insight into membrane structure, signaling, transport, communication, and energy‑related processes at molecular, cellular, and physiological levels. The journal covers membrane biology in human health and disease, as well as in animal, plant, fungal, bacterial and viral systems, including comparative, evolutionary, and mechanistic investigations. We also welcome research on synthetic or bioengineered biomembranes, provided that the systems are biologically derived, biologically inspired, or directly relevant to membrane biology. Computational and theoretical membrane biology (MD simulations, coarse-grained modeling, machine learning, which is relevant to any of the below sections, is also welcome. While we welcome connections to clinical studies, submissions that are primarily clinical in nature or that fail to make connections to the basic science issues of membrane structure, chemistry and function, are not appropriate for the journal. In a similar way, studies that are primarily descriptive and narratives of assays in a clinical or population study are best published in other journals. If you are not certain, please write to us to inquire if your study is a good fit for the journal. Core areas of interest 1. Chemical & biophysical approaches to biomembranes Molecular, structural, and compositional analyses of biological membranes Interactions among lipids, proteins, and membrane‑associated biomolecules Biophysical methods for probing membrane dynamics, stability, and organization Synthetic or engineered biomembranes that illuminate biological membrane function; Membrane solubilization, reconstitution, and enabling technologies 2. Membrane biology in non‑human systems Membrane structure, signalling, and transport in plants, fungi, and diverse animal species Plant membrane biophysics, including responses to environmental cues and stress Comparative physiology and evolutionary perspectives on membrane organization and function Membrane-active peptides (antimicrobial peptides, cell-penetrating peptides, pore-forming toxins) 3. Membrane biology in human health and disease Lipid roles in cellular communication, immunity, and pathophysiology; Membrane lipid asymmetry and intracellular lipid trafficking (flippases, scramblases, lipid transfer proteins) Membrane proteins as targets for diagnostics, interventions, or therapeutics Drug–membrane interactions and membrane permeability · Virus–membrane interactions (entry, fusion, budding) Lipids as drivers and markers of physiological functions Mitochondrial membrane biology and membrane‑centric metabolic disorders 4. Bioenergetics & membrane‑associated energy processes Mechanisms of energy transduction, including electron and proton pathways across biological membranes Membrane‑coupled ATP synthesis and energy‑converting organelles (mitochondria, chloroplasts, bacterial membranes) Experimental, computational, and theoretical studies on membrane energetics that clarify biological function 5. Foundations of membrane biophysics Studies on membrane structure, composition, and organization, including lipid–protein interactions and membrane phase behaviour, lipidomics and membrane proteomics Membrane transport mechanisms such as channels, carriers/transporters, and pumps Signal transduction across membranes and the biophysical principles governing receptor dynamics Membrane mechanics, curvature, fusion/fission, and vesicle trafficking Single‑molecule, electrophysiological, imaging, and spectroscopy techniques for membrane research Extracellular vesicles and exosomes, a rapidly growing field at the intersection of membrane biology, signaling, and diagnostics.
