Summary, etc. Contemporary Islam: Dynamics of Muslim Life is the leading forum for the social scientific study of Muslim life across the globe — its communities, cultures, identities, politics, institutions, and everyday practices. The study of Islam and contemporary Muslim life from a social-scientific perspective is more urgent than ever. The journal provides an active forum for the discussion of new ideas, fieldwork experiences, challenging views, and methodological and theoretical approaches to Muslim life. It approaches Islam as a lived tradition in today’s global societies and is not a forum for normative reflections in Islamic theology or jurisprudence. Historically-informed scholarship is welcome where the analysis speaks directly to the dynamics of contemporary Muslim life; the test is the contemporary relevance of the argument, not the disciplinary background of the author. Contemporary Islam: Dynamics of Muslim Life takes an interdisciplinary approach that benefits from a cross-cultural perspective: articles explore the relationship between Islam and its contemporary cultural, material, gender, economic, political, and religious expressions from diverse social-scientific perspectives, including anthropology, sociology, political science, gender and feminist studies, geography and urban studies, education, media and communication studies, human rights, international relations, diaspora and minority studies, and demography. The journal particularly welcomes scholarship on Muslim politics, governance, and public life; gender, the body, and sexuality; urban space, migration, and belonging; environment and sustainability; and the lived dimensions of religious practice, identity, and change — understood as social rather than theological phenomena. The journal focuses on questions concerning the ordinary aspects of Muslims’ everyday lives as well as more systemic concerns. It focuses on what Muslims actually do rather than what one reading or another of the texts suggests that they should do, and therefore seeks papers on the lived experiences of Muslims in both Muslim minority and Muslim majority contexts. The journal is committed to publishing scholarship grounded in empirical research and comparative analysis that advances understanding of broader intellectual, social, legal, and political developments in contemporary Muslim societies. Articles making more general theoretical or comparative contributions are preferred over those narrowly focused on a single society. Papers based on a single country or case are welcome, provided they also speak to issues relevant to the study of Islam and Muslim life beyond the country in question. To this end, reviewers are selected to help authors reach audiences beyond their niche in Islamic studies. The journal welcomes proposals for special issues and thematic collections. Enquiries should be addressed to the Editor-in-Chief. Contemporary Islam: Dynamics of Muslim Life will be of interest to scholars and students in academic fields related to Islam and Muslim life across cultures. The editorial board reflects the journal’s multidisciplinary and multinational approach. Please read our Editorial Policies carefully before you submit your paper to this journal.
