| Summary, etc. | Friedrich Wilhelm, der älteste Sohn Kaiser Wilhelms I., hatte als Kaiser Friedrich III. nur 99 Tage regiert, als er 1888 an Kehlkopfkrebs starb. In seiner langen Kronprinzenzeit hat er 40 Jahre lang Tagebuch geführt. Für die Jahre 1848 bis 1866 sind die Aufzeichnungen bereits 1929 veröffentlicht worden. Nunmehr liegt die Fortsetzung für die Jahre bis zu seinem Tod in Auswahl vor. Erkennbar wird ein charakterschwacher Thronfolger. Die Vorstellung, dass unter seiner Herrschaft ein liberales Deutschland mit parlamentarischer Verfassung zustande gekommen und der Erste Weltkrieg verhindert worden wäre, erweist sich als reine Mär. Er war ein Spielball in der Hand seiner willensstarken Frau Viktoria. Bismarck hat ihn als tumben Tor betrachtet. Über die gespannten Beziehungen zwischen Thronfolger und Reichskanzler gibt das Tagebuch reichhaltige Auskunft. |
