Am Beispiel der Grenzregion Elsass-Lothringen und dem von der Front zerschnittenen französischen Lothringen wird untersucht, wie tief sich auf beiden Seiten bei Klerikern, die als Soldaten, Sanitäter und Feld- oder zivilseelsorger fungierten, die religiöse Deutung des Krieges mit nationalen Selbst- und Fremdbildern verband. Auf einem breiten Fundament bislang unveröffentlichter Quellen, die dem Buch in einer CD-ROM beigegeben sind, kommt die Autorin zu einem ernüchternden Ergebnis: Die religiöse Deutung des Krieges nutzte sich ab, aber sie wurde nicht grundsätzlich in Frage gestellt. |
