| Summary, etc. | De vervaardiging van rijk versierde kaarten bereikte in de zeventiende en de achttiende eeuw in de Nederlanden een hoogtepunt. Wie waren de kunstenaars die de versieringen ontwierpen? Bedachten zij zelf de decoraties of putten zijn hun voorbeelden uit bestaande grafiek? Waarom weten wij zo weinig over het inkleuren van kaarten en wie waren dan wel die zogenaamde kaartafzetters? Op deze vragen wordt in dit boek uitvoerig ingegaan. Aan de hand van een aantal voorbeelden geven de auteurs een indruk van het aandeel dat beeldende kunstenaars hadden bij de totstandkoming van kaarten in de zeventiende en de achttiende eeuw. Zo komt een aantal onbekende ontwerptekeningen voor kaartdecoraties aan de orde van onder andere David Vinckeboons, Nicolaes Berchem, Adriaan van de Velde en Gerard Lairesse. Bestaande grafiek van beroemde kunstenaars zoals Hendrick Goltzius, Jan Saenredam en Albrecht Dürer werd ook vaak als uitgangspunt voor kaartdecoraties gebruikt. Ten slotte is een hoofdstuk gewijd aan de fascinerende werkstukken van kaartkleurders die bij belangrijke kaarten zelfs met bladgoud werkten. |
