Der in Dresden geborene Jean Paul Richter (1847–1937) ist als Herausgeber der schriftlichen Hinterlassenschaft Leonardo da Vincis bekannt geworden. Sein eigentlicher Beruf ist jedoch der eines Kunstkenners gewesen, dessen Haupttätigkeit in der Bestimmung von Kunstwerken, der Beratung von Sammlern sowie dem Verkauf von Bildern bestand. Die vorliegende Biografie beleuchtet die europäische Kunstkennerschaft im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert, führt die Licht- und Schattenseiten einer schillernden Profession vor und fokussiert auf das Leben eines Kunstkenners, der zwischen den beiden epochalen Figuren Giovanni Morelli und Bernard Berenson stand. Indem sie das Exemplarische in all seinen Facetten ins Zentrum stellt und sozialgeschichtliche Aspekte nicht unterschlägt, vermag die Studie einer zukünftigen Geschichte der Kunstkennerschaft wichtige Impulse zu geben. |
