Summary, etc. BMC Gastroenterology is an open access, peer-reviewed journal that considers articles on all aspects of the prevention, diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disorders, as well as related molecular genetics, pathophysiology, and epidemiology. The journal welcomes manuscripts in the following broad areas of Gastroenterology research: Colorectal Cancer – research in this section includes screening methods (e.g., colonoscopy, fecal tests), genetic and molecular profiling of colorectal tumors, surgical techniques and minimally invasive procedures, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy approaches, tumor markers and prognostic factors, patient outcomes and survivorship care, and early-onset and hereditary syndromes (e.g., Lynch syndrome, FAP). Epidemiology of gastrointestinal disorders – focuses on population-level understanding, such as prevalence and incidence trends of GI conditions, risk factor studies (e.g., diet, microbiome, lifestyle), geographic and socio-economic disparities in GI health, disease burden and health service utilization, screening program effectiveness, and public health interventions. Gastroesophageal disorders – covers upper GI tract conditions including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), barrett’s esophagus and esophageal cancer, esophagitis and motility disorders (e.g., achalasia), hiatal hernia and swallowing dysfunctions, endoscopic diagnostics and therapies, and acid-suppressive medications and long-term impact. Hepatobiliary and pancreatic disorders – explores liver, bile ducts, gallbladder, and pancreas research such as hepatitis (viral, autoimmune, drug-induced), liver cirrhosis and hepatic fibrosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma, gallstone disease and biliary obstruction, pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer, transplantation and liver function assessment, and biomarkers and molecular targets. Intestinal Disorders – includes small and large intestine diseases including inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD): Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), celiac disease and gluten sensitivity, intestinal infections and microbiome research, motility disorders and malabsorption syndromes, intestinal ischemia or obstruction, and experimental therapeutics and biologics. Nutrition and Metabolism – tackles interactions between diet, digestive health, and systemic processes such as nutritional interventions in GI diseases, enteral and parenteral nutrition, obesity and its impact on GI tract, gut microbiota and metabolic regulation, nutrient deficiencies and absorption disorders, metabolic liver diseases (e.g., NAFLD, NASH), and role of nutraceuticals and functional foods. As a BMC Series journal, BMC Gastroenterology does not make editorial decisions based on the perceived interest or potential impact of a study. Manuscripts are considered for publication if they are scientifically valid. For research articles, this includes having a clearly defined and sound research question, appropriate methodology and analysis, and adherence to community-agreed standards relevant to the field.
